Market ResearchPosted: March 6, 2015
Designing for commercial selling I wanted to know exactly what is currently on the market to gain a good understanding of what is selling, the price range, products and fabric and materials. Designing for high end retail I looked in shops such a John Lewis and Debenhams to get a understanding of what it available to buy on the high street, while going into the stores and looking at what is on the shelf there was a lot of information available on the site websites.
The websites offered good quality images of the products and how they have been professionally coordinated with other products and designs. This helps when it comes to designing my own collection. For example one of the images show how a co-ordines that is used on the back of a duvet cover is simply the outside of the main design. This is giving me a good idea of how co-ordinates work so when it comes to designing my collection I can use techniques such as these ones.
The products in store also give information on the fabrics that can be used, baring in mind that these fabrics are going to take a lot of wear and tear depending on the products they are used for. Bedding needs to be soft and comfortable but suitable for constant washing, while fabrics for curtains need to be heavy weight and black out so they can offer darkness when children need to nap.
These are images taken from the Debenhams website page that I have added to my research file.
